What Should You Do After High School?

Graduating from high school is the end of an era. Gone are the days of carefree learning and socializing with friends. Now you need to decide what you are going to do with the rest of your life and that is no small decision to make. While lots of teens see high school as a chore, something to get through and leave behind, the reality is that high school is the last frontier to cross before the responsibility of adulthood takes center stage. Sure studying is work and school isn’t always fun and games but guess what? After high school is over you will come to appreciate it for the relatively carefree time of life that it is. It may sound cliché but once you graduate high school real life begins and how that life plays out is shaped by what you decide to do after high school.

What seniors should keep in mind during their last semester of high school

Jessica Orlidge, 18, saw many of her classmates succumb to bad cases of “senioritis” during their last few months of high school, when even the valedictorian types started to blow off academics.

For Orlidge, the temptation to fall into the senioritis trap was tempting, and she did ease up the pressure on herself after she was accepted at Carlow University in Oakland. But, she is grateful that she still maintained honor-roll grades, despite all of the distractions of high school’s final months.

“In high school, it really becomes very apparent that college is right around the corner,” says Orlidge, a York County native who is majoring in art therapy at Carlow. “You have four years to get there, but four years turn into three and a half because you get accepted (into college) halfway through senior year.”

William’s Comfort Air to award six scholarships to “ExtraordinAIRy” high school seniors

Carmel, IN — Williams Comfort Air, heating and cooling specialists located in Carmel, Indiana, is now accepting nominations for its ExtraordinAIRy Treasures annual scholarship program. Six one-time scholarships totaling $5,000 will be awarded to high school seniors who are seen as ExtraordinAIRy Treasures to our future. These students will have demonstrated ExtraordinAIRy life skills including community service, leadership activities, and family commitment. Students from Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Johnson, Madison, Marion, Morgan, and Shelby counties who will enroll in a university, community college, or vocational/trade school upon graduation can be nominated. There are no requirements for GPA or career choice.

Four $1,000 scholarships and two $500 scholarships will be awarded based on a 400-word essay, submitted by anyone, such as a parent, teacher, counselor, neighbor, or employer. Essays should convey why this high school senior is an ExtraordinAIRy Treasure to our future by including an overview of the nominee’s life skills in action such as integrity, kindness, and commitment to community to name a few. In addition, each nomination must include two additional references from adults who interact with the student in either academic or extracurricular activities. Williams Comfort Air will accept nominations from February 1, 2010 through April 13, 2010.

A Williams Comfort Air committee will determine the six scholarship recipients. Three $1000 scholarships will be awarded to the top three students. The remaining $1000 and $500 scholarships will be awarded based on an on-line vote from April 21, 2010 to May 12, 2010. ExtraordinAIRy Treasures Scholarship recipients will be announced the week of May 17, 2010.
